About USAA Insurance - USAA was founded by twenty-five U.S. Army officers in 1922 as an instrument for mutual self-insurance when they failed to get car insurance due to the notion that they were a high-risk group. The company has since developed to provide insurance and banking services to past and existing Armed Forces members and officers as well as their families.

Brief History Of The USAA Insurance Company

USAA Insurance was formed on the 22nd of June 1922 when twenty-five U.S. Army officers gathered at Gunter Hotel to discuss the procurement of cheap and reliable auto insurance. The company was previously known as the United States Army Automobile Association. Its current name, United Services Automobile Association, was decided in 1924 when commissioned officers of new military services in the United States became qualified for membership. USAA Insurance has offices in London, England, Frankfurt, Germany and other locations.

The main headquarters of the company is located in San Antonio, Texas. It occupies 286 acres of land. USAA Insurance is a leader in direct marketing. Most of the company's business is done over the telephone or internet using employees instead of insurance agents. USAA conducted most of its business via mail until the 1960s. It started using phone-based service and sales in the late 1960s. USAA launched a toll-free number in 1978. In 1999, the company launched internet service and sales through its website.

USAA began offering life and homeowner's insurance in the 1960s, banking service in the 1980s and investment management and brokerage service in the 1970s. Civilians were given restricted membership and access to the company's investment products from September 2009 to August 2013. Non-military members were not able to access property and car insurance policies due to eligibility limitations. The investment products they were able to access were mostly life insurance and bank deposit products.
